Harrietville is one of the few true mountain villages in Australia, snuggled in all sides by steeply rising mountain ranges. At places the valley is less than few kilometres across with ranges either side reaching up to over 1800 metres and frequently covered with snow through winter.

Mt Hotham and Mt Feather top are less than 15 kilometres away as the crow flies and are amongst the tallest of all our winter snow covered mountains.

The town is nestled on the banks of the two arms of the Ovens River and apart from the valley floor is surrounded by native forest. One cannot escape or be unaware of the presence of the created magnificence in all its elements wherever one is in Harrietville.
